6. My Air Conditioning is over ten years old do I need to replace it?

The average lifespan of air conditioning systems here in southwest Florida is generally 10 to 14 years. Ideally, it should be energy-efficient, while maintaining comfort in every part of the home. Your system should be able to reduce the humidity level, while lowering the temperature enough to let people sleep well or enjoy their activities when they’re awake.

Even with regular maintenance, you may reach a point where your system isn’t functioning well enough to keep your home comfortable during the hottest part of the summer.  Contributing factors are the age of the system, excessive noise, increasing energy bills, cooling and humidity inconsistencies.

The SEER rating of a unit is the cooling output during a typical cooling-season divided by the total electric energy input during the same period. The higher the unit's SEER rating the more energy efficient it is.

After January 1, 2015, split system heat pumps will have to be rated at a minimum of 14 SEER and 8.2 HSPF. Packaged air conditioners and packaged heat pumps will have to meet a minimum of 14 SEER – a one-SEER jump from 13 SEER. The minimum-efficiency rating for gas/electric packaged units will also be raised.

Simply a “ton” is a measurement (between 1.5 to 5) of an air conditioner’s ability to remove heat from your home. This is called its “cooling capacity.” But most people just refer to it as the “size” of the air conditioner.

The more cooling your home needs, the bigger the size air conditioner you need. 5 is the largest size; 1.5 is the smallest size.

Regular maintenance will help extend the life and efficiency of your system, keep your utility cost to a minimum and regular maintenance insures that your system is operating properly and safely.

Even if you don’t suspect any problems with your air conditioning unit, it’s a good idea to have it inspected, serviced and cleaned twice a year. Usually spring and fall.

Your smart thermostat is like a window into your home – check the companion app while you’re away from home to see if the air conditioning is running (and at what temperature). A smart thermostat is a great way to confirm the place is running smoothly while you’re away.
